The project staff consists of political scientists, historians, anthropologists and landscape architects. The team will perform a quantitative survey of projects of remembrance as well as a qualitative analysis of six selected public spaces of remembrance in Vienna including the planned memorial to Wehrmacht deserters on Ballhausplatz, the heroes' monument on Heldenplatz, and the Shoah memorial on Judenplatz.

Other case studies will compare the results of the contemporary analysis with politics of remembrance of the first decade after 1945 and investigate informal and "irregular" cultures of remembrance.

In addition to political analysis and field research a main objective is to provide a "Topography of Remembrance" of Vienna as well as interactive maps which connect the localization of memorials with secondary statistical demographic data and other relevant political and spatial information. Overlaying structural and thematic maps shall produce a cartographic depiction of the culture of remembrance in Vienna which may offer deeper insights in its transition and the use and shape of public spaces.

Especially for the period of 1945-2001, the collection of data built on the ground-breaking research conducted by the Documentation Centre of Austrian Resistance.
